CAR - (QuickLook)
Imagery from CAR Instrument
Flight Mission Details
This was a test flight out of Wallops Flight Facility , Virginia to Dismal Swamp and Chesapeake Lighthouse. Preflight goals included testing active roll correction for the CAR instrument and the REVEAL system.
P-3B instrument payload:
CAR - Cloud Absorption Radiometer measured angular distribution of scattered radiation and acquired imagery of ocean surface en route to Ocean City.
REVEAL - The Research Environment for Vehicle-Embedded Analysis on Linux (REVEAL) system is a prototype next-generation tool for aerospace vehicle sensor webs and the future Earth Observation System. Made good progress in testing the system. Was able to "serve" COBALT data to HiGEAR. Partial DC-8 tracks acquired.
CREW:
Pilot: Shane Dover and George Postell.
Flight Engineer: John Doyle
Mission manager: Michael Cropper
Others: Charles Gatebe, Duncan Kahle, Yarbrough Sky, Matt He, Bill and Peter.
Flight Path, Timing, and Measurements
Approximate time in UTC (US East coast time - 4 hours). Activities during CAR flight 2008 on June 13, 2008 out of Wallops Flight Facility (Virginia) to Dismal Swamp and Chesapeake Lighthouse. Observations by CAR operator/PI/Flight Scientist, Charles Gatebe.

16:11 -- taxing
16:18 -- takeoff
16:19 -- CAR power on
16:20 - - problems with motor control system. CAR restarted with old nav code.
16:54 -- BRDF measurements over Dismal swamp.
17:01 -- BRDF measurements in progress
17:03 -- end of BRDF over Dismal swamp. Dustan's roll correction software appeared to have problems. Used Old software during the BRDF measurements.
17:17 -- orbiting over Chesapeake lighthouse
17:22 -- setting up for BRDF measurements
